This chimney is brick veneer
pre- fab with standard galvanized sheet top. Most pre-fabs are
wood or vinyl sided. You can see the rust that has taken
hold.
This house is 15yrs old in lochmere. |
 |
Here we have removed
the square cap and see the area to left of cap in top picture. The
rust has started flaking off meaning there is a lot of rust
there... You can also see the black blobs that were used to seal
the nails they used to secure top. Most of them leakes as well. We
pulled out 7 nail in all around the top. Plus 4 screws used to
attach square cap. |
 |
This is what the
metal looks like under the real rusty area. You can see the
pitting that has occurred allowing water to drip down inside the
chase are. In this house the water ran down a ceiling joist and
stopped at wall causing stains and sheetrock damage. |
 |
Here we have
installed new chase top made of stainless steel. Notice the cross
breaks in metal to create a roof effect. This prevents most water
from pooling on the cover. The cap was re screened and painted to
look new. There are only 2 penetration on top of cover and both
are double calked with 50 yr silicon. |
