If you have gas logs they are more than likely are equipped with a safety pilot assembly. The pilot is an important part of the gas log safety system on your unit. The pilot assembly for a non-vented gas log will be very different to a vented gas log set.
WHAT !!! safety system.. HOW..
Well the pilot’s job is to provide a way to ignite the gas that it introduced into the burner during operation.
another function of the pilot is to provide heat to the thermocouple or in the picture a thermopile. Most newer set use both a thermocouple and a thermopile.
Some issue with leaving the pilot burning during summer are:
1.) They generate heat when running.. just feel your glass on the fireplace. Feel that heat? that is coming into the house all summer making the AC run a bit more. You would not knownly put a small heater in your living room and let it run all summer would you?? i bet NOT..
2.) They use gas. With Nat gas prices lower the past several years the pinch is not as bad. With LP its another story.. With LP at like $2.50 a gallon that pilot running all summer will use quite a bit of that expensive gas. Just ask someone that has forgotten to turn the pilot off.. THey call us the next heating season thinking the log are busted and we always say,,, ” Have you check the tank for gas??” guess how many come back and say man that tank is empty.. we just had it filled before the season last year.
3.) The gas company guys told me to keep the pilot on… Well that’s classic,, the guys that sell gas tell you to use more gas.. good for them, bad for you. “They” claim it keep spiders and such from making webs in the units. But i can tell you even with pilots that run I have cleaned out webs. Of the ones that were shut off some did, most did NOT have webs. These are sealed system and it hard for them to get inside in the first place.
4.) Chech this paper out on how much gas you waste by keeping the pilot on.
Now if you have the IPI or Intermittent Pilot Ignition system you don’t have a standing pilot.. When you flip the wall switch and there is elec power to the house a control module starts the pilot, proves the flame and then starts the burner. When you flip switch off it all goes off.. They are the wave of the future on most new unit installed nowadays.
If you pilot is off and you need help relighting it give us a call.. 919-772-8110 sometime you need to push and hold the pilot in to bled off the bad gas.. I usually hold pilot pushed and count to 15 and then start pushing the clicker to light it..
