How to heat you house for FREE!!!

This info is for ELECTRIC dryer ONLY.. do not try with gas dryer due to CO (carbon monoxide) issues with gas.

In this blog I will share with you something we have been doing for the past 5-6 years and it really helps with providing heat and humidity to the upstairs of my house in winter.

The upstairs of our house is for the most part is not heated in winter. We do have a nice high efficiency gas furnace that keep downstairs nice and toasty and a vent near the front door blows heated air up the stairs keeping the upper area at 65-66 deg most of the time..

So some years ago while doing the laundry i got to thinking, Why dump all that heated air outside during winter. When a dryer is running it sucks air from inside the house, heats it in dryer, evaporates the moisture from the clothes and vents to outside.  So when so much air is pumped out of the house. So where does the air come from……  outside.  Think about it. A house is like a bag and if you suck on one end the bag will collapse, but if you put a hole in the other end and you are not pulling in more air than can come in from the hole the bag will not shrink.

A dryer does the same thing but the hole is leaks around windows, doors and can come down the fireplace flue/damper especially if you leave it open ( a much bigger mistake). Ever notice you might smell the fireplace smell after the dryer has run??? (that might mean you need to clean the chimney as well) The same thing can happen with range hood fans, and bathroom exhaust fans.

So I got a long dryer vent hose from Lowes (or any home improvement store) and pulled the dryer out, unconnected the hose part going to wall and off back of dryer.  I plug the pipe in wall with a small towel to keep cold air from coming in.  I attached the new longer hose to back of dryer and put it back in place allowing the hose to come over the top..

You might be able to go on side it just depends on your washer / dryer area.  If you have pedestal under the dryer you might need to remove back panel where the drawer is to access the are behind or you might can just pull it away from wall.

I put a section of pantie hose on the end of house securing it with 5-6 small binder clips. Now this bit of pantie hose is some 18″ long and not a real fine mesh as you can see.  I have not emptied this one but once so far and it been running for about a good 45 days but do remember to clean filter on dryer EVERY time.  At some point the lint will build up on walls so i just roll the hose in my hand like i am trying to start a fire with a stick.. do this while it running and the lint goes to bottom of trap.

I have a wire coat hanger that is modified to put the hose in and hook on door in hallway to move the heat around. You may  notice humidity on windows if you run a lot of clothes at one time but it not a real problem and it adds humidity to a dry time of year especially if you heat with gas.

You will not see any more lint around than normal I promise. plus the clothes will dry faster in most cases.. If you have not gotten the dryer vent cleaned in the past 3-4 yrs you might want to give us a call in the spring when you hook the dryer back up to outside vent to have to check and cleaned..

That’s what we do. Clean dryer vents in the Raleigh NC area.  We are located at 919-772-8110 Chimney Keepers.
