Recently, I did a repair on a couple of LP gas log direct vent fireplaces. On the first one, in a house built in 2002, the owner had stated the pilot was getting harder to start and at time not staying lite. They also noted the fireplace had been repaired some 5 or so years earlier.
When I asked they kept the pilot lite all year, something I recommend not doing especially with LP. When I got the glass front removed and the logs I was able to see the pilot and it was a mess.
One of the best reason I have found to shut off the pilot during spring/summer is LP burns a bunch hotter than Nat Gas. This causes more damage to the pilot
This is what a pilot for LP fired gas logs should look like.
see the difference??
Now see them together.
I usually find other issues connected with “logs not lighting service request”. Most of the time a good cleaning and servicing fixes the problem for the $149 service call price.. If there are other problems and other parts are need to include a new pilot assembly they are in addition to that price.
